All of the CLC’s core work with Secondary Schools is now tailored individually and planned collaboratively with teaching staff in school. This page is retained for referenece as a description of the kind of work we have done with schools in the past.
Space Day
Space Travel is back on the world political agenda; President Bush has recently announced that humans will attempt to travel back to the Moon in the next twenty years before venturing to Mars before 2050. The school students of 2005 will witness (and maybe even participate in) this extraordinary adventure.During the Space Day, students will examine the challenges of getting into space, surviving in space and landing on another planet. They will participate in a series of hands-on activities and explore multimedia video clips and presentations to gain an appreciation of the reality of space travel. Topics covered will include:
- What is space, where is space and how big is it?
- How rockets work (including Newton’s Third Law) and how to build them
- How do we survive in space?
- The history and dangers of space travel
The truth about space travel is more fascinating than the imaginative Star-Trek speculations of science-fiction writers and movie producers.
