On Wednesday 7th July, the winning groups from Wolverhampton’s Junior Apprentice competition represented the city in the Black Country Junior Apprentice final at Walsall football club’s Bescot stadium. Competing against teams from Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell, Year 6 children from Rakegate Primary and Hill Avenue Primary had to create a charity campaign based around the theme of the World Cup, then present their ideas and marketing materials to a team of business judges.
Both Wolverhampton teams created and presented wonderful campaigns. We are delighted to announce that Hill Avenue Primary, whose campaign was based around the sale of three varieties of “World Cup Cakes”, were deservedly awarded first place. Congratulations to both Hill Avenue and to Rakegate for their efforts, creativity and presentation skills in participating in this fantastic event.

During the academic year 2009-10, Year 6 groups from eighteen primary schools have participated in the Wolverhampton Junior Apprentice Challenge, a business and enterprise project jointly planned and delivered by the City Learning Centre and Wolverhampton Education Business Partnership. This month, the winning group of students from each school have been invited back to the CLC to compete against one another for the right to represent the city in the the Black Country Apprentice finals at Walsall Football Club on 7th July.
In two finals days at the CLC, the first of which was on Friday 18th June, the second this Friday (25th June), the teams are competing to establish their own pizza business, create a name, slogan and logo for the business, design a “signature” pizza topping and then to film short adverts to promote their business. Each team is given a unique location for their business in the city of Oxford and explore their location using Google Street View. The teams then present their ideas and decisions to their peers, teachers and to invited local business people, including representatives from Pizza Hut. The teams which best demonstrate their creative, teamworking, analysis and presentation skills are rewarded with places in the Black Country Final and the opportunity to make their winning pizza for real, courtesy of Pizza Hut.
