Exploring Northycote Farm with handheld technology

filed under News October 17th, 2008 Richard Anderson

Over the next week, the CLC is collaborating with the Wolverhampton Ranger Service to run Primary school visits to Northycote Farm. The farm is a historic site within the city, dating back 400 years.

Under the leadership of the Wolverhampton Rangers, the children are taking part in a series of enganging games and craft activities based upon the farm animals and wildlife of the farm and its surrounding land.

They are also utilising the CLC’s Ameo handhelds to take part in a series of challenges:

  • Eye Spy - finding mysterious objects around the farm courtyard, and learning about the ways in which the farm was used in the past
  • Postcard challenge - searching for the perfect postcard photograph around the farmyard and capturing it using the Ameo’s camera
  • Match the sounds - children listen to audio samples of farm and wild animals and match the animals to the sound
  • Wildlife estate agents - children discover why some habitats are so suitable for certain animals and shoot a short promotional video clip to sell the habitat to the animal who lives there
  • Food chains - children arrange a food chain on the Ameo and learn how it fits into a larger food web
